- A leach field is an underground array of perforated pipes that are adjacent to a septic tank. It is also called a septic tank drain field or a leach drain. It is responsible for removing contaminants and impurities from liquid after it leaves the septic tank.
How often should you siphon a septic tank?
As a general rule, you should ideally empty out your septic tank once every three to five years. However, the actual frequency will vary depending on usage and how many people live in your household.
How does a siphon septic system work?
The dosing siphon is a mechanism that is installed in a septic tank that converts small continuous flows into an intermittent release of effluent. Dosing siphons are made of PVC plastic and have no moving parts. They rely strictly on gravity as their only source of power to release the effluent to the field.
How does a Leachfield work?
How Does a Leach Field Work? The lines or pipes in the septic leach field have small holes along their sides and bottom. As the wastewater flows through the pipes, it leaches into the gravel, sand, or soil surrounding them. The solid waste remains in the septic tank, stopped by a filter.
What are the signs that your septic tank is full?
Here are some of the most common warning signs that you have a full septic tank:
- Your Drains Are Taking Forever.
- Standing Water Over Your Septic Tank.
- Bad Smells Coming From Your Yard.
- You Hear Gurgling Water.
- You Have A Sewage Backup.
- How often should you empty your septic tank?
How do I know when to pump my septic tank?
If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the outlet, or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped. To keep track of when to pump out your tank, write down the sludge and scum levels found by the septic professional.
What is a flout tank?
What is a Flout you ask? Flout stands for “Floating Outlet.” It is a new way to flood septic system effluent into the leach field. It floods the distribution box with water well above the invert of the leach pipes and insures an equal, fast flow of water down all legs of the leach field.
What is a bell siphon?
A bell siphon is a device used to efficiently regulate the flow of water in a media based aquaponics system automatically without human intervention. The bell siphon maintains a minimum water level in the grow bed as it drains the excess water.
What is a dosing tank in a septic system?
Pump tanks (or dosing tanks) are an integral part of any pumped septic system such as a mound system or flood dose system. It is a tank (built like a septic tank) that contains one or more effluent or sewage pumps and controls. Float type switches inside the tank turn the pump on and off.
How long does a leach field last?
It’s important to consider the life expectancy of a drain-field, too. Under normal conditions and good care, a leach-field will last for 50 years or more. Concrete septic tanks are sturdy and reliable but not indestructible.
Is a leach field necessary?
Septic System without A Leach Field You can probably guess, now, that a septic system is incomplete without a leach field. With only a septic tank, you can find yourself needing to empty the tank almost monthly! That is because the leach field is responsible for safely getting rid of the wastewater.
Septic Tank Pumping Litchfield
In order to keep your system operating properly and extending the life of your disposal field, you must have your septic tank pumped on a regular basis. Septic tank pumping is a service that is required by all septic system owners and is the single most important thing you can do to keep your system operating properly and extending the life of your disposal field. The 3-Es of proper pumping service are as follows:
- Removing the lid(s) of the septic tank and exposing it to the elements
- Septic tank extraction includes removing all of the waste from the tank (including the scum and sludge as well as solid solids and water)
- A visual inspection of the baffles and lids to ensure that the system is in proper functioning order
Septic tank pumping is a service in which the septic tank lids are lifted and all of the scum, water, and sludge are removed from the septic tank. Septic tank pumping is performed by a professional. This indicates that the tank has been totally emptied. There is absolutely no necessity to have your septic “liquids” pumped out at any time. Every service should involve the entire removal of all waste from the septic tank’s collection system. Save your money on the Rid-X or other septic tank chemical that you are now purchasing on a monthly basis!

What are the 3 E’s of septic tank pumping? Expose, Extract and Examine
The lids of the septic tank must be removed in order to do a thorough maintenance clean. This entails removing the man-hole covers from the top of the septic tank, which measure 18″-24″ in diameter.
Exposing the Lids
Septic tank cleaning should not be accomplished by pumping it via a 3″-6″ riser pipe over the baffles. As a matter of fact, pumping a septic tank this way will result in a premature collapse of the leachfield or disposal field.
Extracting All Waste
It is essential to have a competent septic tank pumping service in order to remove all of the waste from the tank, including scum, water, sludge and other solid things.
Extracting All Waste
The “liquids” in a septic tank should never be simply pumped out, and there is no need to do so. That service is a hoax, and your money will be wasted if you use it. Regardless of the situation, we always clean your tank properly. The most common reason for leach field failures and replacements is due to improper cleaning.
Examine The Tank
Putting the “liquids” in a septic tank and pumping them out is never a good idea. That service is a hoax, and your money would be better spent somewhere else. Your tank is always cleaned properly by us. When it comes to leach field failure and replacement, the most common issue is insufficient cleaning.
Examine The Tank
What exactly are we looking for? Inside the tank, we inspect the baffles that direct water into and out of the tank. They are really crucial! Every service includes a visual inspection for cracks and root incursions, as well as a thorough cleaning of the effluent filter if one is installed. It is advised that you pump your septic tank every 2 to 3 years if you have an average household of four members. Pumping your septic tank is similar to changing the oil in your automobile; it is mandatory maintenance that must be performed even if there are no visible concerns.
- The chances are that if your septic system starts to back up or is no longer draining correctly, you can’t remember when you last pumped out your septic tank or it’s been more than three years since your last service, it’s time to get it inspected and serviced once again.
- Pump out your septic tank before you experience any problems.
- Waiting for an issue with your septic tank to manifest itself might cause damage to the septic system, block the disposal field, or even produce a septic backup into your house, resulting in wasted time and money on your part.
- It is our goal at Priority Pumping to make your routine septic pumping and cleaning as simple and stress-free as possible.
- It’s just another method in which we look after our consumers.
- Please do not pump your septic tank via the inspection port if you want your septic system to last for a long time.
Whenever possible, pump the septic tank through the lid apertures that are immediately on top of the septic tank or through the riser lid from a riser extension, rather than through the riser. Proper Pumping Port on the Riser Lid
What should I expect with myseptic tank pumping service?
- We will need to know your address as well as the key cross-street area. We will inquire as to whether you are aware of the location of your septic tank. This question will be followed by another, in which we will inquire as to whether you require the septic tank lids to be exposed, or if they are accessible from ground level. We will not have to dig if you can see the lid (which is generally green, as seen in the photo) from the ground level. If you are unable to do so, we will have to dig to find them. SEPTIC TANK CLEANING REQUIRES THE SEPTIC TANK TO BE PUMPED FROM THE 18-24′′ SEPTIC TANK OPENINGS FOR A PROPER CLEANING. A septic tank built after the mid-1990s will have two lids that must be opened since it is a two-compartment septic tank
- However, older septic tanks may not have two lids. If your tank is older, you will have a one-compartment tank, and you will need to uncover the onelid, which is normally in the middle, in order to see what is going on. Tanks from the 1960s through the 1970s can occasionally feature a “coffin” or “quarter”lid. That is, to adequately pump and clean the septic tank, the end of the tank must be elevated. We shall inquire as to whether or not you are aware of the septic tank’s capacity (how many gallons). Don’t be concerned if you don’t have this information on hand. We can look up the County Installation Records if you’d like. Don’t be concerned if there are no records accessible for your residence. We can assist you in estimating the size of your property depending on the number of bedrooms and the year it was built. During the interview, we will also inquire as to when the septic tank was last emptied and cleaned. Septic tanks should be emptied out at least once every two to three years. You should be aware that if it has been more than 5 years since your tank was cleaned, you may be subject to extra costs if the waste is extremely thick within the tank and it takes more than an hour to clear it out. If you use flushable wipes or flush anything other than human waste and toilet paper, you may be subject to extra costs if a large amount of these materials accumulates in your toilet. These objects are exceedingly difficult to remove from the septic tank and may require additional time to thoroughly clean

I was able to detect and solve an unexpected problem that may have caused my septic fields to fail. I will not be using any other plumbers in the near future! Michael S. and Frank S. TalaricoSon, Inc. is a privately held corporation. The septic system on the house we planned to buy did not pass the inspection. We went ahead and purchased the property, and we wanted the septic system up and working by June 8, 2009. The work was began the morning of June 2, 2009 by TalaricoSons. - Frank TalaricoSon, Inc. Most firms wouldn’t tell you the truth and would charge you for a service even if you didn’t require it. They were really quick and transparent about any expenses that would be incurred. They offered suggestions on how to deal with any circumstances that could arise. AL’S SEPTIC TANK CLEANING is owned and operated by Janaki P. In the beginning, the owner of the firm, SVCNick, came out to start pumping the tank. When he finally got to it, he discovered that the entrance cover had been smashed and had been inadequately repaired by the last firm that had pumped the tank. He went a little further and discovered multiple fractures in the cement, as well as the fact that the baffle had fallen. It was him who showed me what he had discovered and suggested that the tank be replaced. We booked a replacement during the next week to avoid any inconvenience. He and his crew arrived on time and finished the replacement job in a single day, as promised. Nick and his foreman are both certified and licensed for the job that was completed by them. We did have some difficulties. We’re at a place where there are a lot of hidden ledges. Their efforts for the new tank were halted by a ledge before they could dig as far as they desired. Aside from that, the ledge made it impossible for them to set the tank in the most advantageous location for maintaining the contour of the slope in the yard. It was explained to me by Nick and his foreman what the options were, and I agreed that the tank’s location would impact how the slope of the yard where it was to be installed. Nick visited numerous times over the course of the following two weeks to check on the system and make sure everything was in working order. When he was convinced that it was, he and his assistant sealed up the few inspection openings that he had left, and we were ready to go. One detail that I should mention that relates to his character is that he is a vegetarian. When the majority of the work was completed, I paid Nick in full. Despite the fact that he had been compensated, he returned to check that there were no difficulties and to do the final landscaping. Not every contractor would have the same level of dependability. As a result, if you want a project done well, on time, at a reasonable price, and by an honest contractor, you should use this firm. Frank S., et al. My personal experience was a mixed bag. While I am convinced that he constructed a high-quality septic system, the result was not what I had anticipated. According to the requirements of the health department, I recruited a designer who was attentive to the aesthetic conclusion of the project. Even though Mellen Septic constructed a functional system, it was not in accordance with the plan for which I had paid $1200. When contacted by phone, he was sluggish to answer, and the project did not continue according to the timeframe he had set. THE NEW MILFORD SEPTIC SERVICESI MARY V. G.
- I had been using New Milford Septic for several years and felt everything was fine—that is, until my septic system was examined. It had been several years since the baffle on my tank had come off, and we were never informed of the necessity for replacement when they drained our tank. I’m curious whether their employees are the ones that destroyed the baffle
- It doesn’t appear that anybody else has accessed the septic tank. When I attempted to sell my property, an examination discovered that my septic system had been clogged with sludge for years. I’m now forced to replace the entire system, which will cost me about $30,000 in total! You should not depend on this firm to keep your system running well if you want to prevent having to pay for expensive repairs or replacement of your septic system. Jennifer D., a.k.a.

Keep Trees Away from the Septic System
- Keeping trees at least 100 feet away from the septic system will help to prevent root damage. It is recommended that trees with particularly aggressive roots be planted even farther away from the system.
Septic tanks function with the assistance of anaerobic bacteria (little organisms that don’t require oxygen) to break down the dibble (Yuk) waste. They require relatively little care, with the exception of cleaning them every three to five years, which is recommended. Some waste floats (scum) and creates a crust on the surface of the water, indicating a healthy system, while other waste sinks (sludge). The cleaner water is channeled through these levels and into the drainage field. During the course of time, the scum and sludge layers accumulate, reducing the amount of clean water (retention zone) available, and finally the sludge is drained into the drain-field.

I would absolutely utilize Suburban Sanitation in the future for my sanitation needs, and I would suggest their services to anybody who is looking for them.
I was interested in the process, and they were excellent at explaining what they were doing and why they were doing it.
The price was reasonable, and I will definitely use them again.
We were quite concerned since this property is where my very old mother-in-law and her live-in carer stay, and we didn’t want anything to go wrong.
It’s all I can say that Mark from Suburban Sanitation came in and took care of the situation.
He conducted himself in a really professional manner throughout the entire process (even impressing the health department inspector with his knowledge). Everything was executed to a higher standard than I had anticipated! I couldn’t be more pleased. R. R. Tolkien’s “The Wizard of Oz”
Household Products That Will Ruin Your Septic Tank!
Many people who have septic tanks are unaware of what they may and cannot flush down their toilets or down their sinks. It may come as a surprise to find just how delicate septic tanks are, and how many common household goods can cause harm to and/or block your septic tank if you don’t know what you’re doing. By keeping these things out from your drains, you can maintain your septic tank in good shape and avoid costly septic repairs down the road. Chemical Cleaners are a type of cleaning agent that uses chemicals to remove dirt and grime.
- You may disturb the bacteria cycle in your septic tank by pouring anti-bacterial cleansers like bleach down your drains and down your toilets.
- Additives Several septic tank additives make the promise that they will enhance the amount of bacteria in your septic system.
- The Environmental Protection Agency and the American Ground Water Trust, on the other hand, warn that chemical additions may cause more harm than good to your tank.
- Using Bath Oils Oil floats to the top of your septic tank, where it congeals and hardens to produce a layer of scum on the surface.
- It has the ability to withstand bacterial activity and embed in the solid waste layer.
- Grease from the kitchen Grease of any kind contributes to the buildup of scum in your septic tank.
- Unless otherwise instructed, you should avoid dumping oil down your sinks.
In addition, dryer papers might jam the entrance baffle.
Over time, the clay will clog your pipes and cause your septic tank to fail completely.
Products Made of Latex The majority of latex-based products are not biodegradable.
If the outlet tee is missing, the latex may clog the drain field on its way out of your septic tank, causing it to back up and choke the tank.
Paints and oils are two types of media.
In order to maintain your soil and groundwater free of diseases, you must have this bacterium on hand.
Prescription medications and chemotherapy medications Even after passing through a patient’s digestive system, powerful medications may still retain active ingredients that are harmful to them.
If possible, avoid allowing drug-contaminated faeces to enter your home’s septic tank.
Some prescription medications have the potential to be harmful to the environment.
Chemicals for Automatic Toilet Cleaning Systems Automatic toilet cleaners release an excessive amount of anti-bacterial chemicals into your septic tank, causing it to overflow.
Instead, choose toilet cleansers that are suitable for septic systems.
Even minute amounts of string, on the other hand, can clog and ruin pump impellers.
In a period of time, it will encircle a pump and cause harm to your septic tank’s mechanical components.
Your tank is only capable of holding a specific amount of domestic water; it cannot accommodate big volumes of water from a pool or roof drain.
Don’t use your sinks or toilets as garbage cans; this is against the law.
Put your trash in the garbage to prevent having to pay extra in pump-out fees.
Young children, on the other hand, may be unable to comprehend how toilets function.
Rather than degrading, the clothing are likely to block your septic tank.
Butts for Cigarettes Cigarette filters have the potential to choke the tank.
For a comprehensive list of potentially dangerous goods, consult your septic tank owner’s handbook or consult with a specialist.
If possible, avoid flushing non-biodegradable goods down the toilet or down the drain. You will save money on costly repairs and you will extend the life of your tank by taking these precautions.
Septic System & Tank Homeowner’s Guide
Over 5,000 residential clients benefit from Universal Septic’s full-service septic pumping, inspection, and repair capabilities. A portion of New Haven and Litchfield Counties are serviced by Universal Septic, as is Fairfield County.
What a Septic System is and how it works There are six primary components to this system: Household waste is transported to the septic tank through an underground sewage line. Solids settle in the septic tank and remain there while the liquids move into the leaching system, as shown in Figure 2. 3. As of the year 2000, all septic tanks were built with output baffle filters installed in them. When the septic tank is being pumped, it is necessary to clean the filters. If filters become clogged on a regular basis, they may require more frequent cleaning.
The use of a leaching system, which may include a leaching field, trenches, leaching pits (dry wells), beds, or galleries, to assist cleanse wastewater through soil filtration, is described in more detail below.
How often should the Septic Tank be cleaned?
Septic tanks should be inspected and cleaned at least once a year. A more frequent cleaning of the tank is recommended if you have a very big family or have an older septic system or a food disposal system. The typical period between two and three years is two to three years. Solids that sink to the bottom of the tank are degraded by bacterial activity as they pass through the tank. Eventually, the leftover undigested material, which is referred to as “sludge,” accumulates and must be disposed of appropriately.
Those solids will clog the pipes, stone, and soil in the area around the pipes and stone.
A four- or five-bedroom house with a 1,250–1,500 gallon tank is not uncommon in the United States.
If the number of people living in the house exceeds the average for that size dwelling (for example, five people in a three-bedroom house), or if the septic tank is smaller than what the state regulations now require, the system should be cleaned every two years until experience indicates that a longer period can be tolerated, at which point it should be cleaned every three years.
Common causes of malfunction that can lead to failure
Regular inspection and cleaning of septic tanks are recommended. Cleaning the tank on a more frequent basis is recommended if you have a big family, an older septic system, or a food disposal. This happens on average once every two to three years. In the tank’s bottom, bacterial activity breaks down solids that have settled to the bottom. Eventually, the leftover undigested material, which is referred to as “sludge,” accumulates and must be disposed of properly. Unless solids are frequently pushed out, they will accumulate to a dangerously high level and can be transferred from the tank to the absorption field by the flow of air.
In Connecticut, for the past 30 years, the Public Health Code has required that new septic tanks have a minimum capacity of 1,000 gallons, or 1,250 gallons in the case of a waste disposal installation, depending on the situation.
A family of five consumes 109,500 gallons of water per year if they consume 60 gallons per person/per day, which is considered normal by most plumbers.
Litchfield-based J J Pumping was established in 1967 and has a long history of delivering cheap septic tank pumping services throughout Central Minnesota, including the rural communities of Litchfield and Darwin, as well as Dassel, Cokato, Grove City, and Hutchinson, among others. Over the past few decades, the service region has steadily expanded and now encompasses the Minnesota counties of Meeker, Wright, Redwood, Kandiyohi, McLeod, Renville, and a portion of Stearns County, among others. When Aaron Thompson and Tim Kinney launched A T Septic and Excavating in 1997, they were celebrating 30 years since the founding of J J Pumping.
- Because tank pumping service was required for each new septic system installation, a large portion of the new pumping work was contracted out to J J Pumping to be completed.
- The consolidation of J J Pumping and A T Septic and Excavating under a single management team offered consumers with a single business that could take care of all of their septic system needs, including design, construction, maintenance, and pumping, all under one roof.
- The map lists all of the counties, as well as all of the cities and township areas, that are serviced.
- On top of that, you may contact J J Pumping directly by phone (see phone numbers at the top of the website pages) or by email at [email protected], which will forward your electronic requests to both J J Pumping and A T Septic and Excavating.
- If given the opportunity, we would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business and put our experience to work for you.
- Thank you very much.
Maintaining your septic system is essential for two reasons: to ensure that your system continues to function correctly and to protect the environment. Here are some pointers that can assist you in determining what may and cannot be introduced into your system. Cooking greases, oils, and fats should not be flushed down the toilet. Eventually, grease solidifies in the septic tank and builds up to the point that it blocks either the entrance or the outflow. Grease thrown down the drain with hot water has the potential to run down the septic tank and fully plug the soil pores.
Additionally, certain organic compounds will pass through the septic tank and into the soil without being treated, polluting the groundwater under the surface.
Any additional things that are unable to decompose naturally should not be introduced into the system as well.
By limiting the amount of time you use your garbage disposal, you may reduce the amount of surplus sediments that enter your tank.
Whether you have any concerns regarding your system or would like JJ Pumping to check to see if your system is operating properly, please call us at (320) 894-7608 or fill out our online form here. We will respond as soon as possible.

Septic System Information for CT – Andrews-Perry Construction
The objective of a septic system is to dispose of wastewater created by building occupants into the soil in a manner that does not adversely affect groundwater, public health, or the environment, and to do so in an environmentally friendly manner. In addition to exterior piping that connects the building’s plumbing to the septic tank, there are several other components to consider, including the septic tank, which collects solid waste and begins the breakdown of waste material by biological action, a distribution system that directs the flow of waste water from the tank to the drainage system, and a drainage system that disperses waste water into the surrounding soil.
