Introduction

A septic tank is a sewage collection system that is located underground (Figure 1). A waterproof container composed of a sound, durable material that is resistant to corrosion and deterioration, the tank itself is a watertight container. The most popular form of septic tank is made of concrete. These should be made of high-quality concrete in order to prevent the possibility of early cracking or degradation of the septic tank during the construction process. It is necessary to cover the inside walls of concrete septic tanks with a durable and waterproof compound, such as coal tar epoxy, in order to maintain the tank’s structural integrity.

Poly septic tanks are simple to install, despite the fact that they are slightly more expensive to acquire.

1. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reports of concrete septic tanks deteriorating prematurely.
2. These corrosive gases have been linked to a number of factors, including the fermentation of food waste from garbage disposals, contemporary cleaning chemicals, particularly those used to remove hard water lime deposits, and the flushing of some pharmaceuticals into the system.

How Does a Septic Tank Work?

As the septic system is operated, sediments (also known as sludge) collect in the tank, causing it to overflow. By holding wastewater in the tank for at least 24 hours, the septic tank is able to remove particles by allowing the sediments to settle on the bottom and scum to rise to the surface. Several baffles are installed within the tank to achieve this task. Over time, the solids kept in the tank will degrade to a degree that might reach 50%.

The treated effluent water is discharged from the tank through perforated drainpipes into the environment. The pipes are buried in an absorption or “leach” field that has been created. Water seeps out of underground drainpipes and percolates into the earth, eventually reaching groundwater levels.

Septic Tank Maintenance

Sludge will collect in your septic tank as a result of the use of your system. Tanks that have been properly built may store enough material for up to three years of safe buildup. At this point, the separation of solids and scum has ceased to occur, and sewage may overflow into the absorption area as a result of the accumulation of sludge. Pumping the collected sludge on a regular basis might help to avoid this problem.

How Often Should You Pump?

Pumping frequency is determined by the following factors:

• Septic tank capacity
• Volume of wastewater flowing through it
• The amount of solids present in wastewater

The volume of wastewater produced by ordinary home activities such as flushing toilets, bathing, and washing dishes is governed by the nature and frequency of these activities. Water conservation methods in the house will assist in reducing the amount of water that enters the system. The use of an in-sink trash disposal will result in an increase in the amount of solids produced. It is important to consider the type and amount of solids disposed of by a garbage disposal before using one. Continuous running water from a toilet or a leaking faucet, or emptying of a whirlpool tub, can stir up the sediments in a septic tank, increasing the likelihood of sludge leakage into the absorption field and, ultimately, failure of the absorption field.

Please keep in mind that septic tank additives, both biological and chemical, are not required and do not reduce the necessity for regular pumping.

Safe Use of Septic Systems

Motor oil, gasoline, paint, thinner and pesticide should not be flushed down the toilet or down the sink drain. These compounds have the potential to contaminate groundwater and to be poisonous to the microorganisms that keep a septic system operating properly. However, keep in mind that when there is a large density of septic systems, there may be a cumulative influence on groundwater from the use of home cleaners, disinfectants, detergents or bleaches, even when used in moderation. It is possible that the usage of continuous toilet deodorizers, which are placed in the toilet bowl, would kill beneficial bacteria that are necessary for the breakdown of waste in the septic tank.

Your septic system will become clogged by objects such as fats and grease, coffee grounds, paper towels, sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, cigarettes, flushable cat litter, and other items of a similar kind.

Protect the Absorption Field

The absorption field must be protected in order to prevent the soil from becoming compacted, which could prevent the drainpipes from functioning properly. Automobiles and heavy equipment should be kept away from the absorption field. Over the absorption field, grass cover and shallow-rooted plants can be beneficial, but deep roots of trees and shrubs can be stressful to the soil and can cause drain lines to become clogged. Flood irrigation above the absorption field may also cause drain lines to become clogged with sediment.

It is important to mow the grass on the surface of an absorption field on a regular basis in order to promote evaporation and water removal from the soil through the leaves. This helps to prevent water from infiltrating into the soil above the absorption field without being needed.

Conserve Water

When adding new appliances or plumbing, keep in mind that the capacity of your septic system must be taken into consideration. Reduce the amount of water that enters the tank. Make use of water-conserving fixtures. Toilet float valves, leaks, and leaky faucets should all be repaired.

Avoid Septic Tank Additives

Yeasts, bacteria, enzymes, and chemicals are offered with the idea that they will improve the performance of septic systems; however, there is no scientific proof that these additions are helpful. Some cleaners, in fact, enable the sediments in an overcrowded tank to be re-suspended, causing the drainage lines to get clogged. Supplements are not a substitute for adequate maintenance and do not negate the necessity for regular pumping of a septic tank. Commercial biological additives are not required for resuming decomposition after pumping since the sludge residue contains active microorganisms that may be used to restart decomposition.

How to Recognize Problems

Become familiar with the symptoms of septic system disorders. For example, extremely lush and green grass over your drain field may suggest that there is a problem with the drainage system. Pay close attention to any slow-draining toilets or drains, sewage aromas, or sewage backing up into the home or over the drain field, among other things. (Written by Jack Milarch, Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Multifamily Housing Association – originally published in the December 2012 Housing Journal) Septic tanks, whether we like them or not, are an unavoidable part of life in many regions of New Mexico. These systems, in conjunction with private domestic wells, constitute a significant and expanding “rural utility,” allowing residences to be built and inhabited outside the reach of municipal utilities systems.

Due to the inability of septic tanks alone to cleanse wastewater to drinkable levels, they are strictly controlled to ensure that their discharge does not harm groundwater.

The National Environmental Management Division’s Liquid Waste Permits ensure that septic systems are built such that appropriate treatment occurs before the waste percolates to the nearest water well.

Conventional water treatment systems were not permitted in locations where water quality is crucial and sensitive, and only Alternative Treatment Systems were permitted.

The National Fire Protection Association and the New Mexico Department of Environmental Quality have been working on proposals to overhaul key rules to be more site-specific and hazard-based so that more cost-effective “conventional” systems can be approved and used in more areas of the state over the last few years.

• Don Becker, a Farmington resident, and the NMHBA’s staff have worked tirelessly to get improvements that we feel will benefit the general public and our contractors.
• The new guidelines are based on geology particular to each site, rather than the “one-size-fits-all” method that has been in place for decades and is no longer applicable.
• Installation Specialists are a novel idea that has gained popularity among many installers.
• Installers who acquire this level of certification will be able to self-inspect and will not be required to wait for NMED personnel inspections, saving them time and money.

This is a tremendous achievement for the sector, as well as a substantial statement of confidence on the part of NMED. The following is a summary of the most significant changes:

• The need for a replacement drain field area has been removed from the statute.

• Septic tank eligibility calculations take into consideration the number of beds in excess of two and the pollution danger, which may result in lots being available that were previously ineligible for septic tank systems.

• Synthetic materials that have been approved for use as a gravel substitute are available.

• A better understanding of real estate contracts and their consequences for septic tank permits is provided.

• Recognizing the existence of systems that divide toilet waste streams from other flows for different disposal reasons, hence reducing drain field flows significantly

• Replacement soil has long been regarded as a viable option for rehabilitating a poorly draining land.

• New leniency on permitting systems where there is no original permit on file, or where the system was installed without a permit, in order for the system to be inspected for compliance with the rules at the time of installation or subsequent modification, whichever is less stringent, is being considered. There was no wiggle room under the previous requirements, which required conformity with “rules in effect at the time of installation.”

WASTEWATER SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONS

Ordinary Septic Tank and Disposal Field (Class 1): This sort of system is comprised of two major components: the septic tank and the disposal field. An underground tank that is completely waterproof, the septic tank is responsible for separating waste materials from liquids. Solids are prevented from leaving the septic tank and entering the disposal field by installing effluent filters on the tank’s exit. This helps to avoid the field from becoming clogged over time. The septic tank’s partially treated liquid effluent is delivered to the disposal system either by gravity or by pumping it into the system.

Trenches, beds, drip systems, and various methods of waste disposal are all options for waste disposal.

Secondary systems are most typically aerobic units that are used to replace or supplement septic tanks in a residential setting.

Because of their ability to significantly reduce BOD (biological oxygen demand) and COD (chemical oxygen demand), these units help to reduce biomat (microbial material that can clog the pores of soil or gravel in the drainfield) buildup in disposal systems, as well as to extend the life of a disposal system.

1. Wetland denitrification can occur as a result of plant absorption and utilization of nitrogen or as a result of a sequential batch reaction (SBR), which functions similarly to a small wastewater treatment facility.
2. Disinfection When there is shallow groundwater or shallow bedrock, it is necessary to disinfect the effluent in order to destroy hazardous bacteria, and this must be done.
3. Units for disinfection come in a variety of configurations; the most prevalent are chlorine capsules and ultraviolet light units.
4. Your system will perform better and survive longer if it is operated properly and maintained on a consistent basis.

The most effective strategy to avert a failing system is to devote sufficient time and attention to its maintenance. For trouble-free operation, make sure you follow the Dos and Don’ts listed below. DO:

• Have your septic tank drained out on a regular basis and inspect it for leaks or cracks. Conserve water in order to limit the quantity of wastewater that must be disposed of and processed by your wastewater treatment and disposal system. Water conservation may also be accomplished by repairing any leaking faucets and toilets. Only biodegradable waste should be discharged into your system. Use of waste disposals should be limited. Whether you compost your waste or throw it away, the choice is yours. Downspouts and other surface water should be diverted away from your drainfield. Maintain easy access to your septic tank lid for tank inspections and routine maintenance. If you are experiencing difficulties, contact a specialist. Maintain a record of all maintenance work performed on the equipment
• Maintain manholes such that they are either secured or heavy enough to deter minors from opening them. Drain obstructions may be cleared out using hot water or a drain snake.

• Installing a septic system in close proximity to a water supply system is recommended. Installing a septic system near a swimming pool or other bodies of water is a good idea. Disposable sanitary napkins, tampons, disposable diapers, condoms, and other non-biodegradable goods should be flushed down the toilet. Solvents, oils, paints, thinners, disinfectants, insecticides, and toxins should all be flushed down the toilet. Such things have the potential to interfere with the treatment process and pollute groundwater. Digging in your drainfield or constructing anything on top of it is not recommended. Anything other than grass should be planted over your drainfield. Compact the earth around your drainfield or drive over it. Caustic drain openers should be used to unclog clogged drains. Allow backwash from your water softener to enter your septic tank. HOW OFTEN TO PUMP A SEPTIC TANK

Regular pumping of a septic tank will help to extend the life of your wastewater system as well as safeguard your drainfield from contamination. The chart below contains guidelines for how often you should get your septic tank pumped on a rough scale. Pumping should be performed every 6 years on a 1,000-gallon septic tank that is utilized by two persons, for example. • Throughout the process, we were really pleased with the assistance we received from this organization. When we noticed that our toilets were backed up late in the afternoon on Thursday, December 27, 2018, we were really disappointed. We contacted the plumbing firm with whom we had previously done business. It was them who arrived, opened the relief valve, examined the septic system, and said that the septic system was full, and that they would not be able to snake the line leading to the septic system until the system had been pumped. Several pumping providers, including this firm, were contacted, but none of them would commit to providing services on Friday, December 28 owing to a projected snow storm. Because of the storm, no one would be able to arrive on that day. In order to meet our toileting requirements over the weekend, we relied on jars and Walmart. Aspen Meadows would be the only company providing service on New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31, the day before the celebration. They blasted a lot of air into our system. Our toilets were no longer working since their giant snake was being repaired. They hired a snake from Home Depot and removed the blockage before re-installing the large snake. They advised us that the system could have simply been pumped on December 28th if we had contacted them. It was such a joy to be able to use our toilets again after 4 days of relying on jars and travelling to Walmart to use the facilities. We are so thankful to this organization, and in particular to Ben and his helper, that we have decided to utilize them for all of our future pumping needs. An electronic Approval for Septic System Operation will be completed once the inspector has decided that the system complies with all relevant regulations. In the case of any structure from which wastewater will be discharged on site and to which a water supply is or will be connected, a septic system will be needed to be installed. The municipality in which the structure is located may keep paper or electronic records of the structure’s history.
