  • A septic tank should be inspected annually to check for needed repairs and pumped as needed, usually every 3 to 5 years. Some alternative systems that are more complex may need pumping more frequently. If you are unsure if your tank needs pumping, have it inspected and get a recommendation for how many years you can go between pumping.

How much does it cost to pump a septic tank in Maine?

The average cost to pump a septic tank is $400. For a home between 1,500 and 3,000 sq ft, expect to pay between $275 and $550 for a typical septic tank pumping. A very large tank can cost up to $1000 to clean.

How often should a septic tank need to be pumped?

Inspect and Pump Frequently The average household septic system should be inspected at least every three years by a septic service professional. Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years.

How long can a septic tank go without being pumped?

You can wait up to 10 years to drain your tank provided that you live alone and do not use the septic system often. You may feel like you can pump your septic tank waste less frequently to save money, but it’ll be difficult for you to know if the tank is working properly.

What are the signs that your septic tank is full?

Here are some of the most common warning signs that you have a full septic tank:

  • Your Drains Are Taking Forever.
  • Standing Water Over Your Septic Tank.
  • Bad Smells Coming From Your Yard.
  • You Hear Gurgling Water.
  • You Have A Sewage Backup.
  • How often should you empty your septic tank?

What to do after septic is pumped?

After you have had your septic tank pumped by a trusted septic company, there are some things you can and should do as the septic system owner.

  1. 1) Get on a Schedule.
  2. 2) Take Care of the System.
  3. 3) Know the Parts of Your System.
  4. 4) Check Other Possible Issues.

Can I shower if my septic tank is full?

Only the water would get out into the leach field in a proper system unless you run too much water too fast. The thing to do is to run your shower water outside into it’s own drain area, but it may not be allowed where you are. Used to be called gray water system.

Can you pump a septic tank too often?

If your septic tank is pumped too often, that bacteria will have no place to go but out into the drain field, which can lead to clogs and failures. So unless your septic tank’s sludge and scum levels reach certain thresholds, it’s actually beneficial to leave the septic tank alone.

How often does a 1000 gallon septic tank need to be pumped?

For example, a 1,000 gallon septic tank, which is used by two people, should be pumped every 5.9 years. If there are eight people using a 1,000-gallon septic tank, it should be pumped every year.

How do I keep my septic tank healthy?

Do’s and Don’ts when maintaining your septic system

  1. Regularly inspect and maintain your septic system.
  2. Pump your septic tank as needed.
  3. Keep your septic tank lids closed and secured.
  4. Be water-wise.
  5. Direct water from land and roof drains away from the drainfield.
  6. Landscape with love.
  7. Keep septic tank lids easily accessible.

What happens if you never pump your septic tank?

What Are the Consequences of Not Pumping Your Tank? If the tank is not pumped, the solids will build up in the tank and the holding capacity of the tank will be diminished. Eventually, the solids will reach the pipe that feeds into the drain field, causing a clog. Waste water backing up into the house.

How much does it cost to pump a septic tank?

How much does it cost to pump out a septic tank? The average cost is $300, but can run up to $500, depending on your location. The tank should be pumped out every three to five years.

Do septic tanks really need to be pumped?

Septic Tanks require regular pumping to prevent malfunction and emergency servicing. The most fundamental, and arguably the most important element required to maintain your septic system is regular pumping of the septic tank. Most experts recommend pumping the septic tank every 3 to 5 years.

How do I clean my septic tank naturally?

You can mix about a 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of vinegar and 2 tablespoons lemon to make your own natural cleaning agent. The baking soda will fizz up to help get the dirt and grime in your tub and drains. It’s a great cleaner and your septic system will thank you!

How do I unclog my septic system?

Sprinkle the drain with baking soda, then dump vinegar into the pipe. Leave the mixture to sit in the pipe for an hour or two. Finally, flush the drain with hot water. If the clog is small, this could be enough to clear the pipe.

How do I check my septic tanks sludge level?

To measure the sludge layer:

  1. Slowly lower the tube into the septic tank until it touches the bottom of the tank.
  2. As the device is slowly pulled out of the water, the check valve closes capturing a liquid/solid profile of the septic tank water. The thickness of the sludge layer can be measured.

Frequently Asked Questions

Obtain a copy of your property’s septic system record drawing (also known as a “as-built”), which is a schematic that shows where the various components of your system are placed on your land. In most cases, your local health authority or health district may provide you with an as-built survey of your property. There are certain companies that allow you to search for your as-built on the internet.

How long do septic systems last?

The design of septic systems is such that they may provide long-term, effective treatment of residential waste if they are properly handled and maintained. The majority of systems that fail prematurely, on the other hand, are the result of poor maintenance. Plumbing issues are often of a less serious nature (such as pipe blockages from tree roots growing into the pipe). Even while septic tanks are quite resilient, they can decay or develop other structural issues from time to time. Having a blocked drainfield is one of the most dangerous problems you may have.

Once the absorption field becomes blocked, it must be changed, which may be quite expensive, costing thousands of dollars.

How often should I have the tank pumped?

The frequency with which you must pump is determined by the size of the tank, the number of persons in the home, and the amount and kind of sediments in the tank. A septic tank should be inspected annually to see whether any repairs are required, and it should be pumped as needed, which is normally every 3 to 5 years. Some alternative systems, particularly those that are more sophisticated, may require more frequent pumping. For those who aren’t sure whether or not their tank requires pumping, they should get it checked out and given a suggestion on how many years they may go without pumping.

Can you tell if the tank needs pumping without digging it up?

If you do not have risers placed, you will have to dig up the ground above the septic tank in order to check it properly. Risers provide for simple access to the septic system while minimizing disturbance to the soil surrounding the tank. Maintaining maintenance records will allow you to have it pumped on a regular basis based on the rate of solids accumulation in the previous year’s data.

What happens when a septic system fails? How can I tell?

Typically, when a septic system fails, it is because the drainfield is not operating correctly. Septic tank overflows can cause the effluent to pour into the drainfield, which can cause the pipes to get clogged. Sinks and toilets in the house become backed up as a result of this. Among the other indicators include slow-draining toilets and drains, a foul smell emanating from the drainfield, a puddle on or near the drainfield, and tainted well water.

How can I prevent a septic failure?

Maintenance, maintenance, and more maintenance. You are responsible for the rest of the process if your system has been correctly planned, sited, and installed. Have your tank pumped every 3-5 years (a technician may provide a recommendation on when the next pumping should be done), minimize excessive water use, and be mindful of what you flush down the toilet and down the drain.

Why is water conservation important?

Septic tanks are mostly comprised of settling chambers. They provide sufficient time for particles and scum to separate from wastewater, allowing clean liquid to be properly discharged to the drainfield. Over time, the scum and sludge layers thicken, reducing the amount of space and time available for wastewater to settle before it is discharged into the drainfield. Septic systems are limited in their ability to treat a given volume of water. For every gallon of water that enters the tank, one gallon of water is pushed out.

When large quantities of water are released in a short period of time, particles may not have enough time to settle and may instead be taken out to the drainfield, clogging the pipes.

I’ve heard I shouldn’t use a garbage disposal. Why is that?

The type of garbage disposal you use has a significant influence on how frequently you will need to pump your septic tank. Food particles are typically not digested by the bacteria and instead build as scum in the tank. If a high volume of water enters the tank, it may drive the food particles into the drainfield, resulting in blockage of the drainfield. If you are forced to use a garbage disposal, you will need to have your tank pumped more regularly.

Should I be careful of what I pour down the drain?

The answer is yes, many of the items that are flushed down the toilet do not degrade and remain in the toilet tank. In addition to using a trash disposal only when absolutely necessary, avoid pouring grease, fats, and oils down the drain and placing coffee grounds and egg shells in the disposal or down the drain. Prevent chemicals from entering your system.

What shouldn’t I flush down the toilet?

The toilet should only be used to flush human waste and toilet paper. Dental floss, cat litter (including “flushable” varieties), hair, Kleenex, cigarette butts, cotton swabs, feminine hygiene products (condoms and pads), paper towels, static cling sheets, diapers, and disposable wipes should not be flushed. These objects have the potential to block the components of your septic system, resulting in a failure.

Will additives help my system?

It is not essential in most circumstances, but families that use a lot of cleaning solutions that include chlorine, anti-bacterial, or anti-septic chemicals cause the naturally occurring bacteria in the tank to die off and need to be replaced. Some houses have a greater accumulation of grease in the tank than others. Although human feces already include the naturally existing bacteria required for the septic system to function, there are several cleaning products and chemicals that can interfere with this natural breakdown, and grease is particularly sluggish to decompose.

We propose a product called Bio-Clean, which is a disinfectant.

What can I plant over my drainfield and septic system?

Drainfields benefit greatly from the presence of grass. Grasses can be used as a decorative plant, groomed in a standard lawn, or left unmowed in a meadow setting. Septic systems should never be planted next to them since the roots of trees and bushes are naturally drawn to water sources and may infiltrate the system, causing it to malfunction. Keep in mind that if you have plants over septic tanks and you do not have risers placed, you will need to dig up the ground to reach the tanks for inspection and pumping on a regular basis, which is usually every 3 to 5 years.

How close can trees and shrubs be to the drainfield?

Trees and bushes often have large root systems that seek out and develop into damp locations, such as drainfields, where they may survive and thrive. To avoid clogging your drainfield, trees and big shrubs should be planted at least 30 feet away from it; but, depending on their root structure and soil type, they may require even more separation.

If you want to plant trees near a drainfield, speak with an expert who can decide the best species to use and the appropriate distances between them based on the soil type on your land.

Can I plant a vegetable garden over my drainfield?

No. The practice of growing vegetables over a drainfield is discouraged. Watering vegetables is necessary, because too much water in the soil diminishes the soil’s capacity to handle wastewater. Some plants have strong roots that might cause damage to drainfield pipes. In addition, bed preparation techniques such as rototilling and extensive digging can cause pipe damage. Additionally, there is the possibility of sewage polluting food crops.

Can landscape plastic or fabric under mulch be placed over the drainfield?

No, since plastic decreases the amount of air exchange required in the drainfield soil. Even spreading mulch or bark over the drainfield is not suggested since it restricts air circulation and causes water to be retained in the ground.

Rainwater is directed onto my drainfield, is this a problem?

Yes. Whenever possible, rainwater from hard surfaces such as driveways and patios should be directed away from the septic tank and drainfield. A shallow trench uphill from a drainfield can assist in diverting water away from the drainfield.

If you live in a suburban or rural area, you are most likely reliant on a septic system to treat and dispose of the wastewater generated by your household. In order to prevent pollution of your well as well as adjacent lakes and streams, a septic system is installed. When a septic system is malfunctioning

  • Correctly positioned, properly planned, meticulously built, and properly maintained

You will have a garbage disposal system that is environmentally friendly. The most important factor in ensuring the longevity of a septic disposal system is maintenance. Learn more by reading and utilizing this fact sheet.

  • How a septic system works, why and how to maintain your septic system, and how to keep your own maintenance record are all topics covered in this course.

Why Maintain Your Septic System?

The tub or shower, the wash bowl, the toilet, the kitchen sink, the clothes washer, and the dishwasher are all sources of wastewater that leave your home. It transports chemicals, sediments, grease, filth, as well as germs and viruses that are potentially pathogenic. Waste water is treated and disposed of by a properly functioning septic system. When a septic system fails to execute these functions, it can lead to contamination of drinking water wells, streams, and lakes, among other things. Even a correctly constructed and run septic system might fail prematurely if the sludge and floating scum are not removed from the tank on a regular basis, harmful items are not allowed to enter the tank, and other preventative measures are not followed.

Pumping Out Your Septic Tank

A septic tank should be cleaned out every three to five years, depending on the size of the tank and the amount and quality of solids that are introduced into it. In general, the clean-out interval is established by multiplying the tank capacity by the number of people in the household per year. When a family of two uses a 1,000-gallon tank, it is recommended that the tank be cleaned every five years. It should be noted that the use of a garbage disposal increases solids loading by about 50%.

When it comes to choosing a maintenance schedule, the most common recommendation for most homeowners is to simply have the tank pumped at regular intervals. A business septic tank cleaning service is typically responsible for the cleaning of the tank.

Finding Your Septic System

In order to keep your system in good working condition, the tank must be accessible for pumping and the drainfield must be well covered. The challenge of locating your system is not always straightforward. As long as the tank’s access hole is located at ground level, there will be no issues. Unfortunately, these holes are frequently concealed by lawns and other vegetation. To identify your system, walk into the basement or crawl space and look for the location and direction in which the sewage pipe exits the wall through the foundation.

A thin metal rod can be used to investigate any potential problem areas.

You may choose to have the access shaft extended up to just below ground level and plainly marked with a stake, a rock, or a birdbath to make it easier to find.

When you have your septic system uncovered, develop a map of where everything is.

Evaluate Your Septic Practices

It is possible for you to make an enormous difference in the efficiency of your septic system as a homeowner. Examine your current maintenance methods in light of the recommendations provided below.

Safe Disposal

  • Motor oil, gasoline, paint, thinner and pesticide should not be flushed down the toilet or down the sink drain. These compounds have the potential to contaminate groundwater and to be harmful to the microorganisms that are necessary for the proper functioning of a system. However, keep in mind that when there is a large density of septic systems, there may be a cumulative influence on groundwater from household cleaners
  • Moderate use of disinfectants
  • Moderate use of detergents
  • Moderate use of bleach
  • Moderate use of household cleaners
  • Clogging your septic system will occur as a result of fats, grease, coffee grounds, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, disposable diapers, and other items.

Protect the Absorption Field

  • Keep autos and heavy equipment away from the absorption field whenever possible. Planting grass cover and shallow-rooted plants over an absorption field is advantageous, but deep roots of trees and shrubs stress and can cause drain tiles to become clogged near the field. To encourage evaporation and transpiration, it is recommended that the grass on the surface of an absorption field be cut on a regular basis.

Conserve Water

  • When adding new appliances or plumbing, keep in mind to take the capacity of your septic system into consideration. Reduce the amount of water that enters the tank. Make use of water-conserving fixtures. Toilet float valves, leaky and dripping faucets, among other things, need be repaired. Distribute the washing of clothing throughout the week. Don’t connect a septic tank to a rooftop drain, a basement sump pump, or footing drains
  • Instead, use a soakaway.

Avoid Septic Tank Additives

  • Yeasts, bacteria, enzymes, and chemicals are sold under the premise that they improve the performance of a system
  • However, there is no scientific proof that additives are beneficial in improving performance. As a result, certain cleansers have the potential to suspend and block drainage pipes and the soil absorption field. Additionally, additives are not a substitute for regular maintenance, and they do not reduce the necessity for routine pumping of your septic tank. After pumping, commercial biological additions are not required since the sludge residue already includes active microorganisms, allowing decomposition to begin immediately.

How Your System Works

A septic system is comprised of two main components that function together:

Septic Tank

The septic tank collects waste water that has been discharged from the residence. Heavy materials settle in this area and are partially digested by microorganisms, resulting in the formation of sludge. Light particles and oil float to the surface and accumulate to produce a scum layer on the surface of the water.

Soil Absorption Field

Partially treated waste water is released from the septic tank through perforated pipes and into an absorption field after being partially treated. Further purification occurs here through filtration and breakdown by microorganisms in the soil, which further purifies the water. Ultimately, this is the last line of defense in the fight against dirty water seeping into lakes, streams, and groundwater.

Maintenance Record

Record-keeping for septic system maintenance may assist you in anticipating when the next cleaning may be required.

Maine Septic Services

The following are some of the most frequently asked questions about septic tanks. If you don’t find your question answered on this page, please contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you further.

Q. How often should I have my septic tank serviced?

It is recommended that you replace your A/C system once every two to five years, depending on how often you use it and how many people are utilizing the system.

Q. Do you have to drive on my lawn to service my septic tank?

A. No, it is not our policy. We carry roughly two hundred feet of hose, which is generally more than enough for most residential applications. We may bring additional hose if necessary if we are given advance notice.

Q. Is it O.K. to use drain cleaners with a septic system?

A. Avoid using drain cleaners and other chemicals whenever possible. They have the potential to disrupt the naturally existing biological processes in the septic tank and leaching region of the property. One gallon of some hazardous compounds can damage twenty-two million gallons of ground water, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Q. Do I need to use additives in my septic system?

In order to maintain a healthy pH balance in your system and to encourage better sewage digestion, we recommend that you flush one cup of baking soda down the toilet once a week.

Q. What do you do with my septage once it is removed from my tank?

It is transported to a Maine DEP-licensed disposal facility, such as a Wastewater Treatment Facility, where it is disposed.

Q. How do I find my septic tank?

A. Here are a few options for you to consider. Septic tanks are typically rectangular in design, measuring around 4 by 8 feet.

  • You’ve probably come across a rectangular stretch of ground where the snow melts first in the winter and the grass burns first in the summer. An underground septic tank can be submerged to any depth between flush with the surface of the earth and more than 6 feet. When you look down in your basement, you can see where the sewer pipe exits through a hole in the wall. Take note of how far the pipe extends below the top of the foundation and whether or not it exits through the wall directly. When looking from the outside of the house, this will provide you with an approximate orientation for the pipe leading to the tank. To determine how far the tank is below grade, measure down from the top of the foundation wall to the ground’s surface and subtract that measurement from the inside measurement (also subtract another 6 because the top of the sewer pipe is usually 6 down on either side or end of the tank) to get a rough estimate of how far the tank is below grade. You can probe for the tank top using a steel bar or rod that you push into the earth. Keep in mind that you are searching for a flat rectangular space around 4 x 8 inches below the surface of the earth
  • Many septic systems are not gravity systems and require pumping to function properly. Excavation around your septic tank and/or pump tank should always be done with extreme caution since electrical lines can be hidden underground and are not usually marked, posing a possible electrical danger. Never fear if you can’t identify your septic tank
  • We have specialized equipment that can help us locate the tank if necessary
  • Just give us a call.

Q. Can my septic tank baffles be repaired?

A. Yes, we replace a large number of deteriorating concrete baffles with PVC baffles each year.

Q. Are septic tank filters any good, dont they plug up frequently?

An absolutely necessary addition to your septic tank is the installation of a Zabel filter by our team. These filters help to keep particles down to one-sixteenth of an inch in the septic tank by trapping about 80% more solids. Over the years, we’ve discovered that the Zabel filters appear to be the most effective. It is just necessary to remove the clogged filter, wash it well and replace it when the problem arises. In most cases, filter maintenance is performed at the same time as septic tank maintenance.

Q. I hate digging up my septic tank and having the mess in my lawn every three years or so.What can we do to save all that mess?

The installation of a riser above the service cover is recommended. It is recommended that each of the access covers for the filter and pump be equipped with a riser as well. Risers are now required under the State of Maine’s Subsurface Rules. We choose to use Fralo risers because they may be erected in sloping grass areas and because they are simple to install flush with the ground surface.

Q. Do you have any other tips you can give me?

A. Without a doubt! View the State of Maine’s Ten Tips for Maintaining Your Septic System for more information.

How often should my septic tank be pumped?

We recommend that you get your septic tank pumped/cleaned every 3-4 years, depending on the size of your family and the amount of water you use each day. A standard tank has a capacity of 1000 gallons and is meant to accommodate three to four people in three bedrooms. If there are fewer people living in your house or if you only use your home seasonally, you may be able to go longer than 4 years between pumpings; nevertheless, we do not advocate going more than 6 years between pumpings unless absolutely necessary.

How does my septic system work?

All waste (from your sink, washer, toilet, and tub) drains through a pipe that runs from your house to a tank on the property. The top layer is made up of paper and unbroken down solids, the middle layer is made up of grey water, and the bottom layer is made up of broken-down solids that have accumulated. Grey water leaches out of an outlet baffle and into your distribution box, where it is equally spread over your leach field, according to your specifications.

Can I drive on my tank or leach field?

It is strongly advised that you do not drive, park, or construct anything on top of the tank or leach field. The septic tank and leach field are incapable of supporting weights in excess of several hundred pounds.

What can I flush down my toilet?

Normal human waste, toilet paper, and grey water are the only items that should be disposed of in your system, according to the manufacturer. The flushing of some feminine products/applicators, baby wipes, paper towels, and cleaning wipes is not suggested, despite what the product’s packaging may state.

What can I put in my septic tank to ensure bacteria growth?

At this time, neither we nor the state of Maine advocate any specific course of action. Bacteria should be produced by your system on its own.

What should I be prepared for during the winter months?

Winter in Maine may bring about a range of issues that can be difficult to identify, rectify, and repair, especially when the weather is cold. Snow protects your septic system by acting as an insulator. Due to the fact that frost may penetrate quite deeply into the ground when there is minimal snow and freezing temperatures, difficulties frequently develop during these conditions.

It is possible that lines, the tank, or your leach field can freeze, or that your pump will malfunction. If any portion of your system freezes, it will have to thaw on its own; however, we may assist the situation by pumping the tank on a regular basis (often once a month) until it thaws.

What can be done if my drain lines are clogged?

Our industrial high-pressure jetting service employs high-pressure water to help in the clearance of blocked sewage systems and drain lines in industrial and commercial settings. Drain pipes that have been clogged due to root incursion or ice accumulation can be removed by employing our jetting service. If the problem is caused by root incursion, we propose that the tree be removed as well. Septic systems can fail for a variety of reasons, including faulty design or construction, overloading, and insufficient maintenance.

What can I do to properly care for my septic system?

  • Ensure that your tank’s baffles and tees are in good operating order and that there is no sludge accumulation
  • Ensure that you clean your tank on a regular basis and that you retain a written record of your cleanings. Food waste should be composted or thrown away in the trash, not in the garbage disposal

FAQs About Septic Tank Pumping

Septic tanks, in contrast to an urban sewage system, which transports wastewater to a central drainage system, treat wastewater on a house-by-house basis. They are the last resting place for all of the wastewater generated by your home, including that from bathtubs, showers, sinks, toilets, and washing machines. Wastewater is channeled into a tank buried in the earth outside your home, and then the water is sent through sloping pipes to a drainage area outside your home.

Why do you need to pump your septic tank?

The sludge that accumulates at the bottom of your septic tank over time is called sludge.

Sludge will ultimately leak into your leach field and then back up into your pipes if you do not pump your tank. Your septic tank may fail and require replacement if it is not pumped and maintained on a consistent basis.

How much does it cost to repair a septic system?

If you cause damage to your septic system, it may be necessary to replace it. A septic system repair can cost anywhere from $650 to $2,900. Major repairs, on the other hand, might cost thousands of dollars or more. In short, septic tank pumping is a necessary but unpleasant activity that should not be avoided. You should consult with an experienced septic tank maintenance specialist if you are experiencing problems with your system. If you have any questions, please contact us.

What causes septic tank odor?
