Pumper: Can you tell me about your most difficult dowsing assignments?
Because the geography was low and swampy, there was water all over the place, and there was a lot of fence and other items in the yard.
It took me a long time to locate the tank, but finally I found, I informed the client that if we continued digging, we would hit the tank’s lid.
He couldn’t believe it, and I couldn’t believe it either.
I’m still baffled as to why they called, other than the fact that they didn’t think I was a witch.
They requested me to find the ancient well since they knew where it was and as a test to see if I could dowse, they wanted to see if I could.
It took me about two hours to find it when I started walking around.
After that, they instructed me to locate a new water vein.
Pumper: Having decided to go full time into pumping, what is the profile of your company?
Wiehr: I’m a self-taught pumper.
As soon as the truck’s engine failed in 2004, I purchased a 1988 Ford F-700 diesel with a 1,500-gallon tank from VH Inc.
My company has grown mostly via word-of-mouth referrals since I began advertising in newspapers and the Yellow Pages in 2009.
I pumped 280,000 gallons of septage in the year 2010.
The search is on for a nice secondhand truck with a 2,500-gallon tank in order to avoid making two journeys to the municipal facility each week in order to empty holding tank.
Wiehr: No, not at all.
I’m not interested in employing people or putting in excessive hours myself.
I will also continue to look for septic tanks or laterals when homeowners experience onsite problems and are unable to locate the necessary components.

| Author:Septic Tank Yank (CO)dougtnash,I have been using L-rods, sometimes called “Witchin’ Sticks”, since 1972 to locate objects buried under the ground.I purchased a commercial unit initially to locate underground power lines, water pipelines, sewer pipelines and telephone lines when I was employed by Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association (REA) as a power line design and staking engineer.I would witch the proposed location of the overhead power poles and anchors in specific areas to determine the location of buried utilities before we sent a 16-inch diameter auger into the ground.The method was quite effective, and the good results saved my employer many dollars in repair costs and prevented a great deal of embarrassment associated with digging up another utility’s infrastructure.As I understand the theory, the objects that are buried emit an aura and the L-rods are transmitting the operator’s aura.The L-rods intercept this energy field, and respond by turning 90 degrees when they encounter the resistance.The strength of the operator’s aura determines his rate of success.I think the faith of the operator in the theory is mandatory.You must believe!:The problem is that there is no way to determine exactly the origin of the aura.It could be a wire, a pipe, a tank, a tree root, or large amounts of trash that was buried on the site.Also, there is no way to determine the depth of the buried object.The L-rods that I currently use are homemade units and are made from 1/8-inch brass welding rod with 3/8-inch brass tubing for the handles.The long portion of the L is 18-inches and the portion that goes through the brass handle is 8-inches long.I use Witchin’ Sticks on every job to locate existing septic systems and other utilities before I start excavation.I also call the local locating service to locate the other utilities.The law in Colorado requires utility location prior to excavation.The service is free, and I use the results of the professional locator’s work to check on my locating accuracy with L-rods. |

Could you ‘check’ your ‘hits’ before you start digging?Curiosity was getting the better of me, I just had to ask.I remember when I lived in County Meath, the well drilling guy said I should get a dowser to locate an underground stream which he did. The well driller then said it was too near the house and drilled away from the house down to the water table. I got the impression that it did not matter where the dowser said the spring was he was going to drill down to the water table anyway. That way he made more money and the spring would be nearer the surface. His mate was the diviner.Regards.Tom. |

If I miss a utility line with the L-rods, either the professional locator or the backhoe operator will find it.:In some instances, L-rods cannot be used.They react to overhead power and telephone lines, wire and barbed wire fences, and to buried debris.On sites where these restrictions are not present, my experience has been that the dowsing technology is effective 100% of the time.Post Edited |

| Author:Septic Tank Yank (CO)hj, this is true, but then there would be no challange.Of course, not all of the utilities in the Larimer County Colorado area subscribe to the free locating service, so waiting several days for all of the locators to do their thing is problematic.Especially if one is confident that the facilities of a particular utility will not be impacted.There are times when installing or repairing septic systems in remote areas that I rely completely upon my ability to locate underground facilities through the use of my witchin’ sticks.Also, the free locating service will not locate existing leach field distribution pipes, septic tanks, sewer pipelines, private potable water and irrigation pipelines, or electric service wires and telephone wires owned by the homeowner. |

| Author:redwood (CT)By the 100% accurate, 0% liabiliy I mean if I use the ridgid navitrack I absolutely know exactly where I’m digging. I have used CBYD and they have located the utilities. If they have mislocated a line it does cause problems on the job and delays but I have 0% liability as it is their mismarking that caused the problem.I was not calling you a druggie but in this day and age with the technology available I cannot see myself walking around spinning copper wires or carrying a forked willow branch. Its entertaining yes but I would not consider it valuable at work. |

How to find septic lines?
I understand that many people do not believe this, but many years ago, my uncle, who has been a farmer his whole life, taught me how to use a coat hanger to locate electric and water/sewer lines. Take, for example, a wire coat hanger. Remove the hook from the twisting section of the hook. To make two equal halves, cut the remainder of the piece in half again. Straighten each individual piece. Then, on each piece, bend it at a 90-degree angle for about 4-5 inches. To do this, make a very loose fist and hold it straight up in the air like you would a stick.
- Make certain that they are able to move freely.
- When you approach near to them, they will begin to cross the road.
- After that, repeat the process in the opposite direction of the first.
- The line is somewhere in the middle of the two options.
- It is quite effective.
Water Witching: Fact or Fake?
Some refer to it as “the gift.” The method of detecting underground water with a forked stick is referred to variously as “dowsing,” “doodlebugging,” or “water witching,” depending on who you ask. It appears to be straightforward, but does it actually work?
The History of Dowsing
According to the American Society of Dowsers, the practice of divining the location of water has been around for thousands of years. 8,000-year-old cave paintings in the Tassili Caves in northern Africa portray a guy with a forked stick, who appears to be searching for water with the stick. The truth is that historical representations that appear to portray dowsing may be found all over the world, including in the temples of Egyptian pharaohs, ancient Chinese etchings, and other places. Despite the fact that most people believe that dowsing is nothing more than a myth, there are still quite a few people who adhere to this technique today.
There are even some scientists who believe that there is more to this than meets the eye, despite the widespread skepticism about it.
What Tool is Used?
While the majority of dowsers use this technique to locate water, some practitioners use it to locate a variety of other items, including gold, explosives, and even a misplaced remote control for the television. Some dowsing implements, such as pendulums and car keys, as well as other items like as wire rods and coat hangers, are used in conjunction with divination techniques. The dowsing rod, on the other hand, is the most often used dowsing implement.
Essentially, it’s a forked branch cut from a live tree that serves as the tool. Y-shaped sticks from willows, witch hazel, and a variety of fruit and nut trees appear to be the most popular, however you may use practically any type of tree for this project.

Is Dowsing Real?
The vast majority of specialists, with the exception of dowsing professionals, consider this craft to be a kind of pseudoscience. Several investigations conducted over the last century have demonstrated that the typical dowser is no more accurate at forecasting the location of water than anybody else. The scientific community, however, was baffled by a research done by the German government in the 1990s. It was undertaken by the German government. During the study’s 10-year research period, researchers coupled up professional geologists with dowsers and dispatched them to arid locations including as Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Yemen to conduct field research.
- In Sri Lanka alone, drill crews completed 691 wells under the supervision of dowsers, with water being discovered in 96 percent of the wells sunk there.
