Although this is not always the case, Mary, as the pumper may be able to access the entire tank bottom from a single opening depending on the tank’s size and shape; however, if your pumper is unable to do so from a single opening, you may want both openings opened to inspect the condition of the tank baffles.

Last month, our septic system overflowed into two bathrooms, which was a nightmare. According to the report, the circuit breaker had tripped and the sump pump was not operating properly. Because it had been 5 years since the tank had been filled, I phoned a local pumper to empty it. Surprisingly, they just opened the overflow tank and pumped the contents of it. That is something I have never seen before. We’ve always had the septic tank itself opened and pumped, which is a good thing. When I questioned the pumper, they said that pumping the auxiliary/overflow tank was standard procedure.

Details: hair may clog traps and drains, but a clogged septic tanks such that it can’t be pumped would be unusual.

I was taken aback by your remark that there is so much hair in your septic tank that it is impossible to clean the tank properly. It is not possible for hair to disintegrate in the drain system or in the septic tank, whether it comes from people or pets. Although the regular amounts of hair entering the building drain/waste pipe system from routine family washing and bathing do not generally cause problems in the septic tank, they can cause clogging at the drain or trap of a sink, shower, or bathtub.

Large amounts of hair can potentially clog a septic pump or a lift pump, depending on their design.

Having that much hair in a sewage tank that it prevents the tank from being pumped by the septic pumping truck would be an unusual and difficult thing to explain to others.

A hair will normally float and adhere to the floating scum and grease layer in the septic tank, but hair may also settle to the tank bottom and become part of the settled organic matter in the tank on rare occasions.

Approximately 98% of themare 1000-1500 gallon concrete; with dimensions 4 footwide, and 10-13 ft in length. Other residential tanksmay either be fiberglass or metal. This informationshould be provided at the time of purchase, or per theinspection of the septic system.Most houses built since 1990 have whatthey call a DUAL CHAMBER TANK. The tank has a wall inthe middle with baffles in it. The front chamber isapprox. 1000 gallons, and the second is approx. 500gallons. This means you CANNOT pump the complete tankfrom one access lid. This dual-tank system was designedto slow the sludge down from entering the drain field,before it completely settles to the bottom. This tankis designed to have more solids in the front chamber(typically closest access to the house), and the secondchamber to have more water less solids. This does notmean the second chamber is exempt from sludge. We contacted the local healthdept., and they all recommend pumping the entire tank.The access lids are approx. 1 foot in fromeach short side of the tank. There is a small 6-8 inchesround plug, inside a 2 foot round hole. We recommendcleaning from the 2-foot hole in order for us to geta proper cleaning. The second chamber can be pumpedfrom the small hole, because as stated above there isn’tas much grease or solids on the walls. This is confirmedbased on the condition of the 1st chamber. If your house was built before 1990,you probably have a single chamber tank. Which meansyou do not have a wall with baffles in the middle ofyour tank. These tanks typically have a square lid toclean from. These tanks can also be 1000 or 1500 gallons,depending on what the health dept. recommended at thetime. These tanks get pumped from the lid closest tothe house. Once again, they will also be back-flushed,and emptied completely.The residential septic system is designto have 3 layers. The first layer top to bottom is alayer of scum, (a mixture of solids, liquids, householdchemicals, and of course good old toilet paper). Thislayer of scum will always be there. The lighter particlessuch as grease, and light objects will remain in thelayer of scum. The second layer is primarily water withliving bacteria, naturally produced by the human body.The Third layer is solids, which have settle from thetop. The bacteria only digest about 50% of the solids,which means the solids can then accumulate, and eventuallyend up in the drain fields. (a few hundred dollars verses several thousand dollars,and a destroyed lawn.) When the scum layer is not maintained(pumped out) it can cause an accumulation of grease,which is very sticky.Allowed to continue to grow, this willcause other objects to accumulate, and cause a massat the end of the main pipe coming from the house. Thismass will eventually block off the sewage flow fromthe house, and cause a back-up into the house. Thisback-up is usually at the least resistant place in thehouse. (a basement tub or toilet, laundry tub, or unfinishedbathroom pipe). The Pumper will decide whether or not the vehicle is capable of providing this sort of service. Is pumping the pump tank a frequent component of your routine maintenance? What is the cost of providing this service? It is recommended that a pump tank be pumped in addition to the septic tank, cleaned with water, and then dried with a blow dryer.
