I have a 30-year-old house with a single chamber 1000-gallon concrete septic tank and a traditional leach field that is in need of repair. We had the tank pumped when we purchased the property in 1990, but I let it sit for 7 or 8 years before pumping it again, which resulted in the need to rebuild the leach field. Maybe it was ready to go after 20+ years, or maybe I should have pumped it sooner.whatever the case, I’m currently in the middle of a three-year pumping cycle and consider it inexpensive insurance.

Crushed septic tank outlet pipe!
I made the decision to dig up the outlet line from the septic tank that leads to the drain field in order to place a “T” fitting in it. What I discovered was that the outlet pipe was not even CONNECTED to the tank’s output pipe! Approximately 25 years have passed since this system was deployed. The exit of the tank and the drain line are separated by approximately 4 inches vertically. There is no indication that the contractor did anything other than insert one end of the DWV pipe into the tank outlet and leave it there.
Not only that, but he backfilled with the clay/rock mixture that had come out of the earth instead of gravel or sand.
The 4′′ diameter has been reduced to maybe 1′′ in height, and there are numerous cracks on the surface.
I’m continue excavating in order to uncover the pipe, which plainly has to be repaired.
I also intend to backfill with gravel/sand, and I’m assuming that using Sch 40 would be the best option to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. I would appreciate hearing any ideas or recommendations you may have on this. My new moniker will be “digger” for the foreseeable future.

Once buried, the tank and its associated components are mostly forgotten until sewage accumulates to the level of ankles in the basement or bursts up in the yard. After that, another septic tank system is wrongly condemned for failing to perform its function properly.

The floating scum layer is located at the very top of the water column and accumulates wastes such as soap or detergent scum, cooking grease, cigarette filters, and any other item that floats in the water.
This layer, which may be found at the bottom of any tank, is formed of disintegrating and partially decomposed organic matter which has sunk to the bottom of the tank.
Some solids are unable to decide whether they should sink or float, and as a result, they may linger in the clear zone between the scum and sludge layers until they are taken out through the exit baffle and pipe.
It is not recommended to flush inorganic objects down the toilet such as plastic film, condoms, and other similar items since they can cause major blockage difficulties in a septic tank.
It is critical that the tank have a large amount of clear space.
The pace at which liquid flows through the tank increases as a result, and some of the solids begin to be carried out of the tank by the liquid.
When the bottom of the scum layer comes too close to the bottom of the outlet device, or when the top of the sludge layer gets too close to the bottom of the outlet device, the tank has to be cleaned.
The type of bacteria in the tank is determined by the type of sewage that flows into the container.
There are no two septic tanks that are precisely same.

How to Connect Pipes to a Septic Tank

The top of the tee should have a short length of pipe attached to extend the opening above the scum layer in the tank, while the bottom of the tee must extend below the scum layer or about 2 feet below the tee.
Connecting Inlet and Outlet Pipes
The waste and drain pumps are located in trenches that slope toward and away from the tank, respectively, with a slope ranging between 2 and 10 percent. For a modest slope, it’s fine to glue the pipes straight to the tee; but, if the slope is steep, you need glue a 22 1/2-degree bend onto the tee to make the glue connection completely waterproof. If necessary, the bend can be configured such that it faces upward on the input side and downward on the outflow side. Despite the fact that the pipes fit firmly in the fittings, it is necessary to glue them together.
If you don’t, the tee may become disconnected and fall into the tank, necessitating the need of expert services to repair. A septic tank may be deadly, and falling into one or even peering into one too closely can be fatal. Never attempt to do this repair yourself.
